The history of the American company Dodds (Jewel Creations) began in 1952, when William Dodds, the owner of a plastics factory in Newark, New Jersey, decided to open a subsidiary.

Inspired by the jewelry boom in the United States, Dodds and his partner began selling DIY jewelry kits modeled on the popular paint-by-numbers kits of the time. The kits included metal frames and a bag of shiny Swarovski crystals in various colors.

The kits were very popular and were sold in 25 stores across the country. The most popular was the Cat kit. The base had pear-shaped ears, a large stone for the head, a large stone for the belly, and a collar that could be filled with four round stones or artificial pearls.
