The company was founded in the Victorian era by Charles Horner, who until the 1880s was primarily a watchmaker, but showed much greater talent when he began making hatpins and jewellery. The Charles Horner brand flourished during the Art Nouveau and early Art Deco eras, until about 1920-25. The pieces made by Horner’s sons during this period are renowned for their fine, delicate lines and are coveted by collectors and lovers of fine jewellery.

After his death in 1896, his two sons, James Dobson Horner and Charles Henry Horner, took up the business and partnered with Charles William Leach. During World War II, when resources were very limited, they switched from using genuine marcasite to using Halifax’s Staybrite silver-tone alloy (chrome and stainless steel). It was “stamped” in such a way that it produced faceted indentations that brilliantly imitated marcasites.
