The store area is 1,100 square meters. ft., which accommodates a private examination room and corporate offices. All this was designed by the architect Nicolo Bini, who proposed a modern aesthetic, accentuated by decorative charming touches. In addition, Ralph Esmerian, owner of Fred Leighton, has created an exclusive collection that adorns the new store. The gallery presents unique examples of products created in the 19th century, as well as exhibits of the 20th century in the Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles.

Among the exclusive jewelry is an aquamarine necklace with rubies from Paul Flato, which belonged to Mrs. Cole Porter, who gave the necklace to Adele, daughter of Fred Astaire. Other pieces include a diamond- and gem-covered ardecole bracelet from Rubel Freres and a 1920 lapis lazuli minaudière with diamonds and moonstones from French jeweler Janesich.

One of the world’s most famous jewelers, Fred Leighton, is now a consultant to his company, which he sold in 2006.
Murray Mondschein was born in the Bronx and went straight into the army after high school. When he returned to New York in 1959, he bought a Mexican artifacts store on MacDougal Street—which was named Fred Leighton in honor of its late owner—and sold arts and crafts, Mexican dresses and silver jewelry.

When a Victorian jewelry dealer gave him some things to sell, he realized that he could make money from antique trinkets, even though they were unfashionable at the time; For months, Mondschein traveled abroad and bought jewelry that once belonged to European aristocrats.

By 1974, he began calling himself Fred Layton and later moved the store uptown, where he prospered selling antique jewelry to wealthy women. He sold his stake in the company in 2006 to Ralph Esmerian, a gem dealer who had worked with Layton since the early years. (Esmerian hired former Martha Stewart confidante Peter Bacanovic as the company’s president.) Layton stayed on as a consultant, and has since expanded his line of new jewelry and watches. However, not all was well at the company. In November 2008, the company’s main creditor, Merrill Lynch, began talking about bankruptcy, which could happen by the end of the year.

Fred Leighton jewelry appears at almost every special occasion, thanks in large part to its generous credit policy of popularity. Sarah Jessica Parker, Nicole Kidman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Doll Parton, Laura Bush, Jennifer Hudson, and Jennifer Lopez have all borrowed his jewelry for important events. He was also responsible for borrowing Judy Nathan’s tiara, which she wore during her wedding to Donald Trump.

In 2005, Fred Leighton Ltd. was found guilty of tax fraud: instead of collecting consumer sales tax, the store created false invoices in another state. The company was ordered to pay approximately $1 million in fines and back taxes.
