The name of the English brand Missoma – not to be confused with the Italian Missoni – is hardly familiar to you.
Megan once appeared in public wearing an engraved signet ring from this brand. There is nothing special about the ring itself – neither in design nor in materials. It’s just a gold-plated silver signet. The plot of the engraving is a heart in a stylized crown. A tiny diamond is encrusted in the heart.
But it was precisely these engraved jewelry that attracted the attention of the public to the Missoma brand, founded in 2010. And not thanks to Meghan Markle. The brand’s most popular feature is the ability to personalize jewelry. Engrave initials, numbers, symbols… Initially, the offer on the site was limited to a choice of available fonts and patterns, but now it has become truly endless.
In 2018, Missoma founder Marisa Hordern offered her clients a new service – engraving according to their sketch. Moreover, ordering jewelry with her is as simple as possible. First you need to choose one of the positions available for such an engraving. Prices for them range from 39 to 169 pounds – these are mainly rings and pendants, but the range is constantly increasing. After selecting a model, you can click on complimentary engraving (that is, “free engraving”) and select the sketch option there. And then draw with a stylus or a finger on the display of your phone or iPad as much as you like, the main thing is not to go beyond the fields marked with a dotted line.
According to Hordern, custom-engraved jewelry makes up 8% of all her products.
In 2018, the company grew from 15 to 40 employees. Not much yet, but the potential is there. After all, the idea is simple and good. The cost of silver rings and medallions with machine engraving is quite low. The margin is good, but it allows you to keep jewelry more than affordable. The client, for a modest amount, receives a personalized or, if you like, unique decoration.
In all Missoma advertising images, models wear not one pendant or ring, but several chains around their necks, bracelets on their wrists, rings on one hand. A kind of bo-chic style. And this already encourages the client to return and buy additional medallions with new engravings. In addition, Missoma offers a variety of matching pendants that are great to wear on the same chain. And this is already something like beads from Pandora, which you can pick up yourself and string on bracelets. The history of the Danish jewelry giant once also began with a small shop.
