Brief biography of the founder
The future founder of the company Thomas Burberry was born on August 27 in 1835 in Dorking, Surrey, UK. After leaving school, he went to neighboring Hampshire, where he got a job as an apprentice with a local tailor.
His first designs were inspired by the everyday clothes of ordinary people. Thanks to his natural talent and love for his work, he begins to experiment with materials. His primary goal is to create outdoor clothing that is perfect for fishing or hunting.
Thomas Burberry was married twice. From his first marriage he had two sons and four daughters.
On April 4, 1926, at the age of 91, Thomas Burberry breathed his last.
XXI century – expanding horizons
In 2000, a mono-brand store opens in the prestigious West End area on Bond Street.
Christopher Bailey took over as creative director in May 2001. In 2003, he was forced to reduce the production of clothes and accessories with a recognizable checkered print.
In 2010, Burberry becomes the first brand to stream its show live and the first high-end fashion brand to support the Ethical Trading Initiative.
In 2011, the company is moving away from the wholesale business model and is focusing on retail, whose share increased from 43% in 2005/2006 to 64% in 2010/2011, respectively. Parallel to this, TweetWalk is launched – a systematic broadcast of impressions on the social network Twitter.
