Jeweler Otto Samuel Keibel was born in Pasewalk in Prussia in 1768. He studied craftsmanship in Berlin with the famous master Francois-Claude Theremin, who was considered one of the best enamellers. In 1788 his son and heir Johann Wilhelm (1788-1862) was born. And Otto Samuel Keibel went to St. Petersburg in search of work. Here he joined the goldsmith and jeweler in a foreign shop. Thanks to his skill, the Prussian jeweler quickly gained wealth, and at the same time the respect of his colleagues in the profession, who elected him a shop headman (alderman).

Keibel’s work attracted the attention and favor of the imperial court, who commissioned a number of exceptional presentation boxes from him. When he died in 1809, his son Johann Wilhelm Keibel continued the business, using the same hallmark as his father, and creating gold boxes, art objects and high quality awards. In 1826, he remade the Imperial Crown for the coronation of Tsar Nicholas I, the future Emperor of Russia.

Having received an Imperial warrant, Keibel’s firm was responsible for the production of all insignia from 1836 to 1841. Keibel’s gold jeweled boxes, which were given as souvenirs or rewards by family members, can be found in the most famous private and museum collections, such as the Hermitage, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
