In 1939, Hans Stern (1922-2007) emigrated from Nazi Germany to Brazil, to the city of Rio de Janeiro.
The international jewelry company H.Stern was founded in Brazil in 1945. It was very difficult to create a name, in the post-war years many companies selling war trophies appeared, but the young jeweler wanted to work with his own material and create such jewelry that would approve of his delicate taste and natural talent as a designer.
Hans Stern managed to collect enough precious stones, he could no longer cope with cutting, so the next stage in the development of his jewelry company was the recruitment of master jewelers. He hired workers to help him cut stones and create jewelry, which was subsequently sold from ordinary stalls, near hotels and in the port, waiting for the next passenger liner.
The young jeweler’s breakthrough came in 1951 when he received an order for a $20,000 aquamarine necklace from Nicaraguan dictator Anastaso Somoza, and in 1955 Stern opened his first store in Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital.
The jewelry company Hans Stern was gaining weight, the business was expanding: first, Hans Stern conquered South America, then Europe, the USA, and Israel followed.
Today the H.Stern brand is the largest in the countries of the Latin American world. There is not a single large hotel where the H.Stern boutique would not open, where you can buy jewelry, accessories, and watches. The most famous and profitable is the store located in Ipanema (a suburb of Rio de Janeiro), about 120 thousand tourists come here every year.
In parallel with the creation of his own brand, Stern was engaged in the study of diamonds, studied the methods of stone processing. Brazil is considered one of the world’s centers for the extraction of precious stones, which is why the crystals themselves cost about 30% less than in the rest of the world. Such a price cannot but affect the cost of jewelry from H.Stern.
The H.Stern company is engaged in the extraction of stones and their processing. The firm has its own team of jewelers and designers. The company has a clear vertical management structure, which has a positive effect on the level of customer service.
The company is today run by the descendants of Hans Stern.
Among the owners of the brand’s jewelry were Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez, Nicole Kidman, the famous American lawyer Lucia Rangel. Many of the company’s products appear in films, for example, in the film “Intolerable Cruelty”. The company also cooperates with many film companies, for example, Walt Disney.
